Short answerInstall FreeBird on the Windows PC where you use HawkSoft 6, connect it to your WhereToBegin.ai account (or start the free 5-day trial), and upload the FreeBird skill in Claude Desktop under Settings, Capabilities, Skills. What you'll learn

How to connect HawkSoft to Claude with FreeBird, step by step

  1. Check what you need. A Windows 10 or 11 PC with HawkSoft 6 installed, Claude Desktop signed in on a plan that allows connectors and skills, and the FreeBird Setup file. No administrator rights needed.
  2. Run FreeBird Setup. Double-click FreeBird Setup. It checks that HawkSoft and Claude Desktop are installed. If Windows shows a Windows protected your PC notice, click More info, then Run anyway.
  3. Choose how FreeBird works. Pick On your screen to watch FreeBird work in HawkSoft (recommended to start), or In the background to keep using your PC while it works. You can switch later.
  4. Let Setup close Claude for a moment. FreeBird adds itself to Claude's settings, so Claude has to be closed while that happens. Quit Claude from the icon near the clock, or click Close Claude for me.
  5. Connect FreeBird and sign in to HawkSoft. Click Finish. In the Connect FreeBird window, sign in with your WhereToBegin.ai membership or start the free 5-day trial with just your email. Then sign in to HawkSoft as usual.
  6. Add the FreeBird skill to Claude. In Claude Desktop, open Settings, Capabilities, Skills, click Upload skill, choose Documents, FreeBird, FreeBird.skill, and switch it on.
  7. Test it. Start a new conversation and ask Is HawkSoft ready? Then try a look-up on one of your own clients, like When does Acme Plumbing's general liability policy expire?

What FreeBird is

FreeBird is a small Windows program that lets Claude do your HawkSoft work. You ask Claude in plain words, the way you would ask a coworker. Claude looks up what it needs, shows you a plan, and once you say yes, FreeBird does the work in your own HawkSoft, reads the result back to check it, and gives you a receipt.

It works the way a person does, through HawkSoft's own screens, signed in as you with your HawkSoft permissions. It does not use the HawkSoft API, so there is nothing for your agency to request or set up with HawkSoft. In testing, a look-up took about 13 seconds, a log note about 6 seconds, and a full certificate of insurance about 30 seconds.

FreeBird is made by WhereToBegin.ai, an independent company. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by HawkSoft, Inc., and it is not a HawkSoft product. HawkSoft is a trademark of HawkSoft, Inc.

What you can ask Claude to do in HawkSoft

Look-ups never change anything, so they need no approval: renewal dates, premiums, policy numbers, contacts, drivers and vehicles, open claims, overdue tasks. Claude can also run HawkSoft's Quick Reports for the whole agency, like who renews next month, book of business by carrier, or home clients without an auto policy, and save the list as a spreadsheet.

Changes always start with a plan. You can paste a contractor's email and ask for the certificate, forward a web form and have it entered as a new lead (FreeBird checks for duplicates first), add a driver, swap a vehicle, log a call with a follow-up task, fill an ACORD 125, or key a dec page. Give Claude several things at once and you get one plan and one yes for the whole list.

A few real requests and what happens
You ask ClaudeWhat FreeBird does
When does the Thornbury homeowners policy renew?Reads the policy in HawkSoft and answers. Nothing is changed.
Make a certificate for Copperline Plumbing for Ironwood Builders, additional insured on the GL.Shows the plan, then makes the certificate in HawkSoft and saves a PDF in Documents, FreeBird, Certificates.
New lead: Saffron Street Bakery LLC, Maria Lopez, wants a BOP.Checks for a duplicate, then adds the lead with a log note.
Log my call with Maria and add a follow-up task for Friday.Writes the log note and the task, each marked [FreeBird].
Who renews in the next 60 days?Runs HawkSoft's Quick Reports and lists them, saved as a CSV if you want it.

You approve every change

Before anything changes, Claude shows you exactly which client, which policy, what will be added or changed, and the log note it will write, then asks Shall I go ahead? After you say yes, FreeBird does it, checks it against HawkSoft, and reports back with what was done, anything you still need to do, and where any PDF was saved. Every log note it writes ends with [FreeBird], so your team can always see which work was FreeBird's.

Some things stay yours, always. FreeBird never sends emails, texts or e-signatures (Claude can draft a reply with the PDF attached, and you send it). It never cancels, non-renews or voids a policy, never touches payments or commissions, never presses submit on a carrier portal, and never types or asks for your password. If a fact is missing, like a VIN or a holder's address, Claude asks instead of guessing.

On your screen or in the background

In on-your-screen mode you watch HawkSoft move by itself. A see-through cover pauses your keyboard and mouse while a change runs, so nothing you type ends up in HawkSoft, and a Stop button is always there. Look-ups do not pause anything, so you can keep typing to Claude.

In background mode, HawkSoft runs out of sight on its own desktop and you keep working. If you need to do something in HawkSoft by hand, click Show HawkSoft in the FreeBird window and Claude's tasks wait until you are done. You can also hand Claude a list, approve the plan once, and walk away. FreeBird works through it and leaves a notification when it is finished.

Frequently asked questions

Is FreeBird made by HawkSoft?
No. FreeBird is made by WhereToBegin.ai, an independent company. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by HawkSoft, Inc., and it is not a HawkSoft product. For questions about your HawkSoft account, contact HawkSoft as usual. For FreeBird, write to help@wheretobegin.ai.
Does FreeBird need the HawkSoft API?
No. FreeBird works through HawkSoft's own screens, the same way you do, signed in as you with your permissions. There is no API access to request and no setup on HawkSoft's side.
Will Claude change things in HawkSoft without asking?
No. Every change starts with a plan that you approve. Look-ups, like a renewal date or a premium, never change anything, so they run without approval. If you change your mind mid-task, Stop this task stops FreeBird before its next step.
Does my HawkSoft data go to WhereToBegin.ai?
No. FreeBird runs on your PC. What it reads for a request is shown to Claude in your conversation, under your agency's Claude plan. The only thing FreeBird sends to WhereToBegin.ai is a device ID, the PC's name and the FreeBird version, to check the licence. Passwords are never read.
Does it work on a Mac?
FreeBird runs on the Windows PC where HawkSoft 6 is installed, since the HawkSoft desktop app is a Windows program. It needs Windows 10 or 11 and Claude Desktop on that same PC.
How much does FreeBird cost?
FreeBird is included with a WhereToBegin.ai membership. If you are not a member yet, you can start a free 5-day trial the first time FreeBird starts, with just your email and no card.
Is WhereToBegin.ai affiliated with Anthropic?
No. WhereToBegin.ai is an independent course built by Ben Revzin. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Anthropic, and Claude is a trademark of Anthropic.
